Budget eating in Singapore. Maxwell Road Hawker Food Center. Endless stalls presenting food from all over Asia at affordable prices. How we did it.
Three nights in Singapore with a tight budget, surrounded by ultra expensive restaurants and bars. Here is how we survived.
Maxwell Road Hawker Food Centre
Foodies rejoice! Here you will find literally hundreds of food stalls lined up beside each other with endless aisles and thousands of food and drink offerings.
Never enough tables, always long lines. Take your time to walk around and carefully look at the offerings and prices. This place is budget paradise, but watch out for stalls with no prices and clarify the price before confirming the order. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, most stalls are very friendly and helpful. Wait for your order politely to the side. Good luck finding a table; sit wherever there is a free seat and enjoy! Most of the hawkers are informative and friendly. Have fun trying several different stalls and dishes – be adventurous. Prices start at around $2.50 for a dish and go up from there. Trays are available, as are chopsticks, plastic spoons and sometime forks. Take your own serviettes or tissues! Drinks are sold at separate stalls.
Here is a breakdown of some of the Asian dishes we tried while at the Maxwell Road Singapore food court. Note: SGD$1 is approx. USD$0.70 or Euro 0.65 (Feb. 2017)

Fried Spring Rolls SGD$5 – who doesn’t like spring rolls?! Green Curry with white rice SGD$5 – nice. Pad Thai SGD$5 – ate this twice. An additional SGD$1 was added to the price of each dish due to Chinese New Year, so this increased the price drastically, but the food was so good, we splurged.
