With an entertaining view overlooking the Chiang Rai Night Bazaar, Sawaddee offers more than only great Thai food.
Restaurant Name: Sawaddee
Address: 112/29 Moo 8, Prasopsuk Road, Tambon Wiang, Amphoe Mueang Chiang Rai, Chiang Rai, 57000, Thailand
Note: This is an independent restaurant review based on my experience.
Conveniently located in the heart of the tourist venue Chiang Rai Night Bazaar, Sawaddee is a Thai delight you should try at least once.
The Restaurant: Because it is located on the second floor, overlooking the beer garden, it offers a relaxed, entertaining view of the hustle and bustle below. It is a large, open dining area with a good amount of seating. If you want the best seats in the house, you had better be early or make a reservation. Red table cloths, candles and warm lighting set the mood.
The Best seats, imo, are at the railing with a view of the Bazaar.
The Service: As you make your way around Asia, it is easy to forget that civilized word: Dining! Night markets seem to be the choice for eating do to the cheap prices and the huge selection of various food. Sawaddee takes Thai cuisine to a different level. The server was not only professional and efficient, but had many suggestions, and was very friendly. We ordered iced tea to quench our thirst and a Tom Kha Gai soup as a starter, followed by Gai Nam Dang and Pad Thai Gai.
The Food
The menu is extensive! Soups, seafoods, noodles, vegetarian and rice dishes tempt even the most meager appetite. They also offer “Set” menus for 5 or more people with a nice variety of pre-set dishes.
The dishes are large, so be sure to order a variety and know you will share - family style dining.
Tom Kha Gai: Thanks to our server, we ordered one soup instead of 2 and soon learned why. Two bowls, a ladle and a hot lit base was set on the table, crowned with a big hot pot of creamy coconut based chicken soup. It was incredibly delicious, with a mild, addictive spicy flavour.
Gai Nam Dang: The garlicky, stir fried chicken came with a side dish of white rice. Mushrooms, red peppers, soya sauce and tomatoes enhanced the flavours and colours of the dish, creating a slightly sweet thai chili taste which we enhanced with a little red pepper. Thai wishy ? (whiskey) added the finishing touch to the sauce.
Pad Thai Gai: The typical Thai dish was as delicious as the best. Wonderful fried glass noodles with egg, tofu, chicken and all the wonderful seasonings and spices.
As you make your way around Asia, it is easy to forget that civilized word: Dining!
The Cost: Our total bill for two persons was 377 baht / €9.85 / USD$11.40. Although a little pricier than we like, well worth it. Everything was absolutely delicious and we enjoyed the dining atmosphere while watching the chaos below! I highly recommend this Thai restaurant – Sawaddee. We like it so much, we dined here twice.
