The famous island of Capri, Italy has been a popular modern destination since the 1950’s when celebrities like Clark Gable, Jackie Kennedy and Sophia Loren basked in the sun drenched cliffs overlooking sparkling turquoise waters. Upscale hotels, shopping, restaurants and cafes cater to the constant mass of honeymoon couples and visitors.
This well beaten tourist path was a destination I was not overly interested in visiting. But, being that we were so close (Naples), we decided to take the plunge and catch a 80 minute ferry to the Italian island Capri so I could form my own opinion.
As we were making the final approach with the Ferry, I could not contain my awe of the breathtaking view and the unexpected relatively calm port. The distinctive lush foliage covered limestone cliffs dotted with typical white plaster block homes overlooking shimmering sapphire and turquoise waters was fast finding a place in my heart.
Enchanting winding and interweaving walkways, alleys and stairs lined with tropical foliage and scents of flowers, citrus trees, and basil lead up to the bustling town of Capri. The slow wander up with the spectacular views alone make the island worth visiting!
The town itself was very busy, but as always, you can avoid the crowds by hitting the back streets or sit in a cafe and enjoy the masses moving past, in and around and then take the refreshingly peaceful hike back down! I completely understand why Tom Cruise, Bill Gates and countless others find their way to this enticing island. Spectacular beauty, honeymoon paradise – definitely worth a visit.
